Data Storage Media Devices

!±8± Data Storage Media Devices

A data storage device is used for recording information and storing digital data. Recording can be done in a variety of ways using virtually any form of energy ranging from manual muscle power in handwriting to even more hi-tech forms like electromagnetic energy modulating magnetic tapes and optical discs.

There are different types of data storage devices. However, the most commonly used and popular ones today are hard drives, memory card readers, floppy disks, zip drives and USB flash drives.

A hard drive is a non-volatile storage device which stores digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating rigid platters with magnetic surfaces. In layman terms, it is what any computer runs on to store data. An external hard drive can also be added to a system to increase storage space.

A memory card is a device typically having a USB interface. It is used for accessing data using different methods such as Compact Flash (CF), Secure Digital (SD) and multimedia cards. Most memory card readers also offer write capability and along with the card it can also function as a pen drive.

A floppy disk is a data storage medium that is composed of a disk of thin, flexible (floppy) magnetic storage, which is encased in a square or rectangular plastic shell. Floppy disks are read as well as written by a 'floppy disk drive' or FDD. This should not be confused with 'fixed disk drive', as that is another term for a non-removable type of hard disk drive. Generally, floppy disk drives have some limited use especially with legacy industrial computer equipment but now they have been largely shed by USB flash drives, external hard disk drives, CDs, DVDs and memory cards.

A zip disk is entirely different. The act of packaging a set of files into a single file or archive is called a zip file. Normally the files in a zip file are compressed. This enables the files to take up less space in storage or less time to send files to someone by e-mail. There are several popular tools which can be used for zipping files.

A USB flash drive is a flash memory data storage device which is integrated with a USB (Universal Serial Bus). USB flash drives or pen drives are typically removable and rewriteable. It is much smaller than a floppy disk and is also very light weight as most of the USB drives weigh less than 30g. Its storage capacity in the coming years can be as large as 256GB with steady improvements in size and price.
